Dear Editor,

National Law Enforcement Week was observed from May 11 to May 17, 2025, with National Peace Officers Memorial Day observed on May 15. The week serves as an opportunity to honor, remember, and support the courageous police officers who dedicate their lives to protecting our communities. I express heartfelt gratitude to these brave men and women who serve with professionalism, dedication, valor, and self-sacrifice. I also extend my appreciation to their families for their sacrifices.

Our law enforcement community is one of our greatest assets, tirelessly working with integrity and honor to make a positive difference. These officers risk their lives every day to keep us safe and secure. As community leaders, they contribute both on and off duty. Their impact is significant, whether they are coaching life skills and character development through sports, mentoring youth groups, or building positive relationships with students as school resource officers. Additionally, police officers volunteer in our schools, churches, fire and rescue departments, and many non-profit organizations, such as Triad, Special Olympics, Lions Club, Volunteer Montgomery, and the Montgomery Christmas Store. They also collaborate with local businesses to enhance economic well-being and growth.

For those who take an oath, police work is not just a job; it is a calling and a commitment to serve and protect. They are our first line of defense. As we honor all who serve and have served, let us remember to pay tribute to our fallen officers and their families.

In Montgomery County, we remember Christiansburg Police Officer Terry Griffith, Christiansburg Police Officer Scott Hylton, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Corporal Eric Sutphin, and Virginia Tech Police Officer Deriek Crouse for their ultimate sacrifice. I encourage everyone to recognize and thank our law enforcement officers during this important week.
