Montgomery County’s Animal Care and Adoption Center hosted an opening event for its Kitty Supply Drive May 31 to help prepare the center for kitten season, which generally lasts from April until October.
Vendors included Mountain View Humane Spay Neuter Clinic, The Friends of Animal Care and Control, and Simple Fixin’s.
Eileen Mahan, director of the ACAC, said there were more than 100 visitors on the day of the event, and the center “received well above the expected amount of donations.”
There will be other events throughout the month to support the Kitty Supply Drive, including Caturday events, which allow participants to help socialize cats from the center and practice reading aloud, on Saturday, June 21, at the Christiansburg Library, and Wednesday, June 25, at the Blacksburg Library.
Meadowbrook Library will host a Caturday in partnership with ACAC on Monday, July 14.
Volunteer Montgomery will host an event to collect items in exchange for kitten cuddles, Mahan said, starting at 6 p.m. on June 24.
Monetary donations are greatly appreciated, and the ACAC also has Walmart and Amazon wish lists available to the public through the center’s website at www.montva.com/acac.
The wish lists contain items such as throw blankets, pet beds, a variety of toys, wet and dry food, litter and scoopers, thermometers, bath wipes, heating pads, food and water bowls, bottles, kitten formula, and feline heartbeat simulators.
Additionally, the center is sharing weekly goals on its social media, and the first week’s supply challenge item was dry kitten food.
“Growing kitties need nourishment,” the center said on its Facebook page. “Did you know kittens four to 12 weeks old need up to a half cup of food per meal and eat three to four meals a day? If you’re able to assist, thank you in advance. We might even name a kitten after you! Seriously.”
The Kitty Supply Drive will last throughout the month of June, and the center is planning its second annual “Tail”gate Pawty for next year, Mahan said.
Montgomery County ACAC is open to the public at 480 Cinnabar Rd. in Christiansburg from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; from 3-6 p.m. on Wednesdays; and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
