Each year Volunteer Montgomery serves approximately 300 homebound seniors who receive home delivered meals through the New River Valley Agency on Aging and Montgomery County Department of Social Services.
“This is our eighteenth year of conducting this project, a joint effort with Volunteer Montgomery and the Christiansburg Recreation Center,” Volunteer Montgomery announced. “This project provides another support system for seniors to maintain dignity and independence while remaining in their home environment.”
The Supplies for Seniors project “serves those citizens who are most vulnerable in our area,” Volunteer Montgomery says.
People have the chance to support the effort and participate in a raffle to win a big prize with the Gift Cards Galore raffle currently underway. One raffle ticket is $25 and two tickets cost $40. The winner, who will be announced in November, will win $2300 in gift cards and discounts (see the graphic accompanying this story for details on how to purchase raffle tickets).
“Many of these seniors do not always have transportation to the store and during the winter months, many are housebound for even longer periods of time. They live on fixed incomes, struggling to pay increased medical, heating and utility costs, especially during the winter.”
Basic household and personal care items are included in the bags of supplies that are delivered, including paper towels, toilet paper, soap, deodorant, lotion, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, laundry detergent, tissues, hand sanitizer, cleaning supplies, food storage supplies, trash bags, dish detergent, disinfectant wipes, foil, plastic wrap, band aids, crossword or word search puzzles, pens, pencils, and note paper.
The project is made available through fundraising efforts and sponsorships.
