Blacksburg struggles with the need for more housing as Virginia Tech’s population continues to rise.

This past week, town council approved the rezoning of 2.77 acres off Whipple Drive from RM-48, which is a modified residential number of 48 bedrooms per acre, to Planned Residential, which will now allow 96 bedrooms per acre for this development.

Approximately seven four-bedroom townhomes are planned for the property at 1709 and 1711 Whipple Driver. Each townhome would have four bedrooms, giving the new hosing development a total of 124 new bedrooms.

The agreement would increase the open space at this property from 20 to 40 percent and the amount of greenspace from 42 to 58 percent.

Planning Commission had approved the change for the development earlier this summer.

Also, council gave their approval for an auto dealership to be located at 1711 North Main Street.

Grant Walker plans to open a specialty car dealership, where import classic cars are brought from Japan and sold online only. Approximately 10-15 vehicles would be on-site at any given time and stored in a downstairs warehouse. There will be no outside display of the vehicles at any time.

Council approved the special use permit by a 6-0 vote.
