Radford, Auburn, Christiansburg advance in state volleyball playoffs

Three area high school teams took the next step toward a state volleyball title this past weekend.

Radford, Auburn and Christiansburg all picked up quarterfinal wins.

Christiansburg remained unbeaten with a 23-25, 25-16, 25-17 win over Alleghany.

Ela Shepherd had 12 kills and 20 assists, and Blair Self had 27 assists. Sophia Russell added 11 kills and Ellie Eddleton 12 kills. Reese Hall had nine digs and eight aces, and Tatum Trotter finished with 10 kills and two blocks.

Christiansburg (27-0) will host New Kent (20-4) for a chance to play for a state title.

Radford moves on the Class 2 playoffs after a 25-21, 27-25, 25-13 win this past Saturday against Central Wise. Mattox Adams led the team with 32 assists, 12 digs and three kills. Briana Dobbins finished with 22 digs, four assists and two assists.

Lillian Joyce added 14 digs, eight kills and one ace, while Jaylyn Holt tallied 10 kills. Raelin Adams added 12 digs and eight kills.

In the next round, Radford (23-1) was scheduled to play John Battle (19-6) on Tuesday.

Auburn downed Chilhowie 25-17, 25-16, 28-26 to advance to another Class 1 state semi where they will play Giles for the fifth time this season. Giles (24-2) has beaten Auburn (21-7) all four times.
