Supervisors deny construction landfill expansion

The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors have voted down a request to expand a current construction building landfill.

Black Diamond Resources has been operating an eight-acre site for the past eight years but says they are gradually approaching filled capacity. The company had asked to expand it to 43 acres, which would allow for two million cubic yards of building debris over a 40-year period.

Typical items brought to the landfill are soil, brick, concrete blocks and other building material.

The majority of the board was concerned about the increase in traffic leading into the site and visibility of the site from US460.  The current entrance traverses through a Christiansburg residential area in Village Lane.

A 20-foot buffer area had been proposed between the site and the residential properties.

While the traffic would vary on days of operation, Black Diamond said it could push 20-30 average trips on certain days. But it could reach as many as 100 trips on certain individual days.

The board’s decision, which had been postponed from last month, came after the county’s planning commission was in favor of the expansion.
