BLACKSBURG – The Virginia State Police are continuing to investigate the death of a pedestrian in Blacksburg who was hit and killed by a Blacksburg police officer responding to an emergency call.

Spencer Davis Woodson Forsling, 22, of Blacksburg, was crossing North Main Street when he was struck. Forsling died at the scene.

“A 2021 Town of Blacksburg Police Ford Explorer was traveling west, responding to an emergency call, when the vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing the street,” the Virginia State Police announced. “At the request of Chief John Clair, with the Town of Blacksburg Police Department, the Virginia State Police, Bureau of Field Operations and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, Salem field offices are investigating the crash, [which] occurred on Wednesday, Dec 3 at 2:27 a.m. in the 100 block of North Main St., at the intersection with Roanoke Street.”

The VSP announced the emergency lights and siren on the police vehicle were operational and being used at the time of the crash and the traffic light was green in the officer’s direction of travel at the time of the crash. The officer was responding to a structure fire call.

“The Virginia State Police is conducting this investigation to determine the factors in the crash and when the investigation is completed, the findings will be turned over to the Montgomery County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office for review and adjudication,” the VSP announced.
