James L. Dowdy died Dec. 12, 2025. He was born on July 19, 1935, to the late Kent and Lena Sowers Dowdy. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sallie T. Dowdy; son, Steven D. Dowdy; six sisters, Annie Bradberry, Faye Smith, Mollissa Hall, Weeda Bradberry, Betty Mae Waldrop and Shelby Jean Dowdy; and two brothers, Russel Dowdy and Billy Dowdy.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Janet Dowdy; brother-in-law, Garnet Hall; special friend, Norma Hill; and several nieces and nephews.

James grew up in Blacksburg. He served in the United States Army from 1956 – 1958 before serving on the Montgomery County Farm Bureau Board and on the Advisory Board of the National Bank. He was the owner of Blacksburg Floor Fashions from 1974 – 1996 and a member of The Belmont Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Prices Fork Community Church.

Funeral services will be conducted, Friday, Dec. 19, 2025, at 2 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Reverends Shake Smith and Mike Hill officiating. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends 1-2 p.m. prior to the service at McCoy Funeral Home.
