Opponents of the boys’ basketball team at Christiansburg High School are having to deal with double-trouble this season.

The “twin towers,” Walker and Garrett Overbay, are leading a resurgence for the program. Both are sophomores and hard to deal with when on the court at the same time.

Walker is 6-5 and averaging just under 10 points a game. His brother, Garrett, is 6-8 and scoring at a 14.6 clip per game.

Together, they have helped Christiansburg to a 7-3 record this season, the latest being a 75-63 loss to Salem. This year’s squad includes seven sophomores.

Their coach, Kevin Cox, described the Overbay twins as passionate players who hate to lose.

“They complement each other on the floor,” he said.

Cox also praised this young group of players.

“This class, sophomores, are really good, and I am hoping they will only get better.”

Walker, who is 6-5, played a key role in the recent upset win over Cave Spring, pumping in 15 points and pulling down five boards. He is also an outstanding right-handed pitcher who has fastball reaching 79 miles per hour and a slider with effective motion.

Garrett stands 6-8 and is a highly regarded prospect in the 2028 class. He is also an outstanding baseball player, pitching, first base and outfield. He recently was named the Most Valuable Pitcher after leading his team, USA Prime Coastal Scout, to the Perfect Game WWBA Pre-Freshman Summer Championship title.

The two brothers are typically on the court at the same time, except for one instance this past week at the Chance Harman basketball tournament. It seems for once the other did not know where the other was on the court and stepped on his foot during practice. Thus, Walker had to sit out the contest because of the injury.

“We know each other really well and where the other will be on the court,” Walker said.
Garrett agreed saying they know each other’s game.

Cox said they push each other in practice, probably harder than anyone else you can imagine. In examining each other’s game, they had this to say.

“Garrett plays through contact,” Walker said this past weekend. Meanwhile his brother pointed to Walker being a really good shooter.

Cox said both are still learning and the ceiling is a long way away for both.

The twins have shot up in height over the past 18 months, adding almost five inches onto their measurement. And in both cases, they seem to have lots more growing left.
