CHRISTIANSBURG – The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC) has awarded Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRV) the Pathway to Excellence designation.

This is the hospital’s second time achieving the award, “affirming its commitment to a positive practice environment for nurses” Carilion announced.

“We are honored to receive this distinction a second time,” said Kristi Hall, D.N.P., senior director of nursing. “This recognition demonstrates our ongoing dedication to supporting nurses through autonomy, life balance, shared decision-making, professional development, and continuing education—all of which enable us to provide the best care for our patients.”

CNRV is one of six in Virginia to earn the award, and only 281 hospitals nationwide have gotten the four-year designation.

The Pathway to Excellence designation “is awarded based on 63 elements of nursing performance and six essential standards that foster a positive work environment for nursing staff,” according to Carilion. “The six major elements include: shared decision-making, leadership, safety, quality, well-being, and professional development. Carilion met the highest scoring thresholds to earn this designation. These standards influence key outcomes such as turnover rates, job satisfaction, employee engagement, productivity, patient safety, and teamwork.”

“We see it every day – Our culture of caring drives excellence in patient safety and clinical outcomes,” said Bill Flattery, vice president for Carilion’s Western Region. “We are fortunate to have such a talented, dedicated nursing team. They are essential to everything we accomplish.”
