Mike Gummer of Christiansburg tied for first in The Radford Photo Club Christmas photo contest at the February meeting with a close-up photo of the family Christmas tree. “The bright colors and white lights gave it a cheerful holiday look.” He explains, “I used a special filter to create the star effects and a bit of extra glitter.”

Joe Pack of Fairlawn went further from home and took his winning holiday photo of the seasonal lights at Natural Bridge.

Gummer won the open competition with a photo taken after the recent snowfall. “I set-out on a late afternoon to photograph a cluster of trees in a nearby pasture. I was able to isolate one for a silhouette shot against the fading winter sky,” he explains.

Night Watchman David Martin of Pearisburg spoke about his photography journey, from the night skies to daytime images of groups and how he is still able to capture a dramatic sky while keeping the central image sharp. He showed photos of happy couples and dramatic portraits of silhouetted subjects. https://www.nightwatchmanphotography.com/work

The next meeting will be March 19 at 6 p.m. at the Radford Public Library. The speaker will be train photographer Ken Miller of Salem, N&W historian, photographer, editor, and book and magazine author. The photo challenge for the March meeting will be night photography with light. There is also an open category.

Several outings are planned, including with local photographer Jeremy Riffe to experiment with early evening and night photography. Follow The Radford Photo Club on Facebook for notifications about outing and events (https://www.facebook.com/groups/1923381475201424/). The club will have a show at the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley in April and May.

The Radford Photo Club is a public group for all levels of photographers from the New River Valley. Club officers are Tracy Burlingame of Riner, Chuck Lynch of Christiansburg, and Jennifer Franklin of Pulaski.
