Montgomery Clayton Short, 64, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026. Monte survived a major stroke for 24 years and his family was thankful for the extra years God gave him with us.
Monte was born in Bluefield, West Virginia on Dec. 28, 1961, to George Clayton Short and Janet Baldwin Short. He was the oldest of five children. Monte was a proud veteran of the United States Army Reserves and the United States Air Force. Monte served in Operation Desert Storm in 1991.
Monte is preceded in death by his mother, Jan Short. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Short, his sons, Aaron Short, Bryce Short and stepson, Kyle Bomar, and four grandchildren, Koda Short and Anna, Mary Clare and Sophia Bomar. Monte is also survived by his father, Clay Short, and his siblings Lorilyn Pomerhn (Dan Pomerhn), Bruce Short (Leah Short), Eva Atkins (Alpheus Atkins) and Ed Short (Traci Short); his mother-in-law Lillie Argabright and sister-in-law Lisa Parker (Tom Parker). Monte will also be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews and the many members of the churches he was part of during his life.
Monte was a member of Dublin First Church of God, Roanoke First Church of God, and Red Hill Church of God during the course of his life. At each church he served God faithfully. He sang in the choir, helped on the mission team, transported bread to the food banks, and visited nursing homes. He also loved being a part of the live Nativity and Resurrection programs to proclaim the good news of Christ’s birth, death and resurrection to save sinners.
Monte loved working and being outside. He was an auto mechanic for many years after his military service. He also was the caretaker of Camp Christi in Christiansburg before he suffered his stroke. He loved camping with his family and going to Izaak Walton Lake to shoot guns with his family and friends.
There will be a time of visitation at Dublin First Church of God on Monday, Sept. 28 at 10 a.m. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be at the Southwest Virginia Veterans Cemetery at 1 p.m. The family and members of Dublin First Church of God would invite everyone to return to the church for a meal and time of fellowship at 2 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, Monte would appreciate donations to the Red Hill Church of God and its ministry. Donations may be mailed to the church at 6708 S. Indian Grave Road, Boones Mill, VA 24065.
The Short family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home in Radford.
