PILOT – Springhouse is hosting an event with renowned local artist Charlie Brouwer Friday, Dec. 6, 2024, where a new documentary film will premier about Brouwer and his journey with sight.

The event, which will be held 5 – 7 p.m., includes a screening of the film “Somewhere Out There” directed by Julian Aceituno and Barkin Özturk from Florida State University. There will also be a community conversation with Brouwer about his journey as an artist and loss of sight, exploring the theme of resilience.

Springhouse will be exhibiting three unique facets of Brouwer’s work: a wood sculpture titled, “Higher Thoughts,” a special ladder installation called, “Springhouse Seeker’s Gate,” and several large canvas works of charcoal tree drawings.

“It was during the winter of 22/23 that the trees waved their limbs to me against the sky,” said Brouwer. “They seemed to say ‘Even with your vision loss you can still see us! Pay attention and we’ll teach you about patience, perseverance, and resilience.’ So, I began drawing them…dark charcoal on white paper and canvas.”

With winter approaching, Springhouse invites the larger community to take time to celebrate the light that is known in the dark and the resiliency that comes from within.

“This event has naturally emerged from Springhouse’s collective learning that honoring both the darkness and the light allows for a more rooted and strong community,” said Jenny Finn, Executive Director of Springhouse. “We recognize that to know the light, we must know the dark. This grows our resiliency and capacity to serve a world in need.”

A meal of soup, salad, and bread will be provided, prepared by Springhouse staff and several students. The suggested cost to attend the event is $20 and no one is turned away for a lack of funds. Registration is now open. Learn more and register at https://springhouse.org/event/resilience-dark-light/

Springhouse is an intergenerational, vitality-centered learning community in Pilot where they are fundamentally transforming the purpose and practice of education. Learn more about Springhouse at https://springhouse.org/. It is located at 144 Silver Maple Lane, Pilot.
