Sons of Confederate Veterans meeting

The Sons of Confederate Veterans, Stuart Horse Artillery Camp 1784 will meet at 7 p.m. at the NRV Super Bowl, 375 Arbor Drive NE, Christiansburg. Ninth District Traveling Staff

Congressman Griffith’s Ninth District staff will be available at the Radford Recreation Center, 200 George St., 12:30- 2 p.m. In the event of inclement weather (heavy snow, sleet, icy rain, etc.), traveling office hours may be rescheduled to avoid putting constituents at risk. If city’s schools are closed, then its office hours will be closed as well. Please contact the Christiansburg Office at 540-381-5671 or the Abingdon Office at 276-525-1405 with any questions or to schedule an appointment time in the event of office hour closure.

Disaster Preparedness with Professor Stephen Owen

Will you know what to do when disaster strikes? Come to the Radford Public Library, 6- 7 p.m. to learn useful information about a wide range of scenarios from a disaster preparedness expert. Professor Stephen Owen of Radford University will be at the library sharing practical information based on years of disaster planning experience. This educational event is free and open to the public. Everyone who attends will be entered to win a prize, a brand new first aid kit! CFNRV Scholarship Application deadline

The Community Foundation of the NRV’s scholarship application is open to students pursuing a two-or-four-year degree at a college or university, as well as trade or technical schools. In 2026, CFNRV will give out more than $150,000 in scholarships to dozens of students. Application deadline is 5 p.m. Apply at https://cfnrv.org/scholarships/applicants-information/

 

Monday, Jan. 26:

 

Montgomery County Board of Supervisors meeting

Public meetings are normally held the second and fourth Monday of each month at the Montgomery County Government Center, 755 Roanoke St. in Christiansburg. Closed sessions begin at 6 p.m. if needed. Open sessions begin at 7:15 p.m. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. All regular meetings of the Board of Supervisors are rebroadcast on Montgomery County Comcast and Shentel Channels 190 daily.

 

Radford City Council meeting

The Radford City Council will hold its regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. in council chambers at the Radford Municipal Building, 10 Robertson St., Radford. Citizens are invited to attend and allowed to speak at each meeting. See the agenda at www.radfordva.gov.

Blacksburg Town Council meeting

The council meets in regular session the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the Roger E. Hedgepeth Chambers of the Blacksburg Municipal Building, 300 S. Main St. These meetings are open to the public and televised live on WTOB Channel 2.

 

Friday, Jan. 30:

 

Laura Dean, Children’s book author

Warm Hearth Village team member Laura Dean will share her award-winning children’s picture book, Georgia Jipp: Blizzard Pilot, which tells the true story of a courageous young pilot who flew more than 150 life-saving missions for the American Red Cross during the historic South Dakota blizzards of 1949. A brief author talk at 1p.m. at Warm Hearth Village Center, 2387 Warm Hearth Dr., Blacksburg, will explore the inspiration behind the book, followed by Q&A and a book signing. Books will be available for purchase at the event and are also available on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Imaginations/Annie Kay’s, and The Book

House in Floyd.

2026 Citizens Institute: Registration open

Do you want to learn more about the Town of Blacksburg? Are you a new or current resident, a retiree, or just someone who wants to get involved in your community? Join us for the 2026 Citizens Institute to meet town staff and learn about the functions of your local government. Classes will be held Monday evenings April – June, 6-8 p.m. Participants must be 18 years of age or older and must be residents of the Town of Blacksburg. Space is filling up fast! Christiansburg Christmas tree collection

Christmas tree collection will run weekdays from Jan. 5-16, 2026. Please remove all lights from your trees, as well as the stand. Artificial trees, garland and wreaths will not be accepted. Leave your tree at the curb for collection. Crews will follow normal garbage collection routes, so please place your tree out prior to your normal collection day.

 

Blacksburg Christmas tree collection

Christmas tree collection is available to all Town of Blacksburg refuse and recycling customers. Trees that are collected will be chipped and used as an alternate fuel source. Place your cut tree at the curb no later than 7 a.m. on Monday of the second week in January to ensure pickup. Trees and greenery must be free of all decorations and wire. Applications open for NRV Master Gardeners class

The New River Valley Master Gardeners are currently accepting applications for the 2026 Master Gardener training class. The class will be on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons from 1-4 p.m. at the Montgomery County Government Center. The course will begin on Feb. 10 and end on May 5. There is a 50 give-back in service in approved garden related projects. To apply, please email Wendy Silverman at wss@vt.edu by Jan. 19, 2026.
