RADFORD – Adam Barger, Ph.D., has been selected as assistant vice president of Radford Online. He will begin his duties on May 25, 2026.

This is a newly created position, reporting to Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Bethany Usher.

“Adam brings a wealth of experience to the position,” Usher said. “He complements our team because of his commitment to Radford’s regional public mission and his ability to partner with faculty in the teaching and learning space to transform programs.”

Under the newly organized Radford Online single service model, Barger will provide strategic leadership and management of online, distance and hybrid education programs. He will coordinate with faculty and staff as well as institutional partners and vendors.

“I am inspired by Radford’s commitment to building stronger communities through inviting learners of all backgrounds to excel,” Barger said. “My career has been shaped by the belief that education must be human-centered, equitable, and grounded in authentic partnership with supporting communities. I welcome the opportunity to bring that perspective to this important work.”

Barger has more than 20 years of experience in secondary and higher education. Most recently he was executive director of the Studio for Teaching & Learning Innovation at the College of William & Mary, where he led a team developing online and hybrid learning experiences that are evidence-based, personalized, innovative, and aligned with core competencies. He also served as an adjunct faculty member, teaching subjects including digital fluency and technology-enhanced learning.

Barger earned a Ph.D. in curriculum and educational technology from William & Mary, as well as an M.S.Ed from Old Dominion University and a B.A. from Cedarville University.

Associate Provost for Academic Affairs Jeanne Mekolichick led the search committee, which included university faculty and staff involved in online learning.
