Blacksburg High School needs a new football coach after Zach Leonard was named to similar post at Roanoke’s William Fleming.
Blacksburg was 5-6 this past season, while Fleming was 8-4 overall, losing in the Class 5 state playoffs. This past year, Leonard was named the all-county/all-city coach of the year is after leading the Bruins to the postseason before bowing out in the first round against George Washington.
Leonard, who still resides in Roanoke County, was officially announced last week during a press conference at the school and has 15 years of experience coaching and teaching in the New River Valley and Roanoke Valley.
Leonard graduated from Patrick Henry High School and holds a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance from Ferrum College.
He told reporters he was incredibly excited to be a Colonel. “Roanoke City is home to me, and I believe deeply in this community and its people.”
The announcement included a new athletic director, Zach Quest, for Fleming.
The search for his replacement at Blacksburg will begin immediately as the team is expected to begin summer workouts later this month.
