Steven Rickey McKelvy, affectionately known to family and friends as “Spook,” passed away July 1, 2026, in Roanoke following a brief illness. He was 72 years old. Born Nov. 1, 1954, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Steve was the son of the late James Edward McKelvy and Sallie Rickey McKelvy. He graduated from Chattanooga High School with the Class of 1971.

Steve was one of those people who could light up a room with his sense of humor. He loved to laugh, play practical jokes, and keep those around him smiling. His quick wit and playful spirit will be remembered by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him. A devoted fan of Alabama Crimson Tide football, Steve rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on his beloved Tide. He also had a special place in his heart for English Bulldogs and cherished the many loyal companions he shared his life with over the years.

Steve was preceded in death by his parents, James Edward and Sallie Rickey McKelvy.

He is lovingly remembered by his brothers, Charles (Sandra) McKelvy, Gerald (Tanya) McKelvy and Michael (Paige) McKelvy; his sister, Lynn (Mike) Otis; and many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends who will miss his laughter, his stories, and the joy he brought into their lives.

In keeping with Steve’s wishes, no formal services will be held. His family will honor his request and remember him privately, celebrating a life filled with humor, love, and unforgettable memories. Though he has left this world, the laughter he shared and the smiles he inspired will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

The McKelvy family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford.
