Drought and high temperatures are worrisome

I guess everyone has a hero, someone they think a lot about, someone whom they respect and appreciate what they did and how they did it. In my case it would be Will Rogers and Andy Rooney.

Two guys who could say something with meaning with a little humor. There is nothing wrong with being able to say something in a humorous way that means something to anyone reading their stuff.

Lately, I have been reading several of Andy’s books, the last one being “Out of my Mind.”

In one of the chapters Andy discusses floods and droughts.

The state of Virginia and several other areas of the country are currently going through a dry spell. Many feel that this summer could bring a period where water is at a premium. I thought Rooney’s approach to the subject was interesting.

“Drought worries me more than flooding. It is more than sad to see houses swept away and dogs in rowboats. Floods are more dramatic than droughts, but in my worried little mind, the earth is more apt to dry-up than drown.”

“Droughts are a time-consuming worry that can take your mind off your own petty concerns for a while because of the daily drought reports about global warming. Everything is melting, even icebergs. With the melting ice the seas are rising along with the level of the ocean.”

People at the Outer Banks, in North Carolina, and New Orleans know what I am talking about.

Mr. Trump does not seem to be too concerned, but when then temperature is over 100 at the end of June that concerns me and a lot of other citizens. Worried about what the rest of the summer is going to be Like (July/August).

I think we in the New River Valley have been lucky to a degree. We have had several thunder showers that have cooled things down for a while and the lack of rain has slowed lawn mowing, which is somewhat nice. But there is more to life than lawn mowing.

We have some responsibility to watch how we are using water. It doesn’t take that much of a sacrifice, cutting back on our water use to make a difference.

If we all make a little sacrifice here and there it will add up and all of us will feel better about what we have done for the home team.

The home team being us – thanks.
