Stay and Play, a Library Playgroup

Every Wednesday after Storytime, 10:30 – 11:30 AM, Blacksburg Library

Under their parent’s supervision, babies and toddlers can play during this informal gathering. This program is for ages 0-4 and meets in the storytime room.

Parents and caregivers are invited to socialize while supervising an informal play group for their babies and toddlers. Ages 0-4 years.

Club M.O.M. (Meeting Other Munchkins)

Every Wednesday after Storytime, 11:15 AM – 12:15 PM, Jessie Peterman Library, Floyd

This play group will meet every Wednesday there is a Storytime planned. Relatives can relax and have a cup of tea while their children play with blocks and other toys.

April Art Exhibit: Jessica Goldsmith

All Month of April, at the Blacksburg Library

Local artist Jessica Goldsmith works with both oils and with roving, which is the cleaned, combed fiber of sheep, alpacas, and llamas. Stop by and view her fantastical creations!

April Exhibit: Shining Opus Designs

All Month of April, at the Blacksburg Library

Eli Tuchler, the artist behind Shining Opus Designs, began wire wrapping in 2011 in his hometown of Blacksburg, VA. His passion for the art of wire jewelry led him to gain a deep appreciation for natural gemstones and minerals. This appreciation fuels his goal of displaying choice gemstones in the most eloquent way possible using silver and gold wire.

Junior Artist Program

Become a Junior Artist and earn a sketchbook! Just pick up an art card at the front desk, visit Miss Jessie’s Gallery, answer a few questions, then return your signed card to the front desk for a bookmark. Complete five cards, and you will get your very own artist sketchbook. Parental assistance is encouraged, particularly for the littlest Junior Artists!

All Month of April, at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library

We are thrilled to welcome the Textile Artists of Virginia and Penny Lane. TAVA is a local fiber art group; the members are sharing “Hot Stitches,” textile art melted with soldering irons, then embellished. Penny Lane is sharing her delicate fungi jewelry. She stabilizes the fragile fungi, then may chose permanent inks to enhance their natural beauty. The show will be up through March and April.

Beyond Earth Day: What You Can Do

Join us to learn about local initiatives to help protect the environment all year long. Local experts will give brief presentations on their organizations and initiatives to make it easy for you to take the next steps to keep your Earth Day energy going. Refreshments are served at 6pm, program begins at 6:30pm. Brought to you by Sustainable Blacksburg.

VA Boating Safety Course

Saturday, April 28, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library

All operators (regardless of age) of PWCs (personal watercraft such as jet skis, Sea Doos, and Wave Runners) and operators (regardless of age) of motorboats with a motor of 10 horsepower or greater will be required to have a boating safety education. Caturday Reading Buddies

Sign up at the front desk for a 15 minute slot to read to a cat from the Montgomery County Animal Care and Adoption Center to practice reading and socialize shelter cats. All Ages.

Spring Plant Swap

Saturday, April 28, 2:30 – 3:30 PM at the Blacksburg Library

Bring a plant, take a plant! Houseplants, seeds, small shrubs, and vegetable seedlings welcome. Swap begins promptly at 2:30 PM! Free and open to everyone!

Fiber Art Demonstrations

Sunday, April 29, 2:30 – 4:00 PM at the Jessie Peterman Memorial Library

Join Megan McKewan as she demonstrates how to create beautiful hooked tapestries. Learn what tools are needed and how to choose colors and fabrics. This will be followed by a felting demonstration by Robert & Jeanne Martin of Chestnut Ridge Farm. You’ll learn the difference between wet, needle and nuno felting and see examples of each technique. They will also demonstrate how to card wool and make roving.
