Alpha Mu Master Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority has presented monetary donations to the Christiansburg Rescue Squad and the Christiansburg Fire Department for 50 years.

The non-profit service group is the world’s largest women’s organization. Its longest serving member who has been a member with our chapter for over 50 years, confirms that the chapter has supported both the Rescue and Fire Departments for over 50 years.

“I am just amazed!” Carolyn Sowers, treasurer and publicity chair of the Alpha Mu Master Chapter, said. “Our local chapter of Beta Sigma Phi has supported both the Christiansburg Rescue Squad and the Christiansburg Fire Department for over 50 years. Locally, we support a number of groups such as MCEAP, the Free Clinic of the NRV, the Pregnancy Resource Center and the Women’s Resource Center; however, our main service donations each year go to the Rescue Squad and Fire Department because of their hard work and dedication to serving our entire community.”

Rescue Chief Joe Coyle who has been squad captain for seven years said the sorority’s help and attention are extremely valuable.

“We are appreciative of Beta Sigma Phi’s support for the squad for decades. It’s been phenomenal, year after year and we very much appreciate what they do for us and for the community,” Coyle, who accepted the award, said.

Accepting the donation on behalf of the fire department was Chief Billy Hanks, who is also the 2018 Governor’s Virginia Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year.

“We are very appreciative of the community support we receive for fundraising efforts, which allows us to give back to these entities. We use to have more members and more lucrative fundraisers, so we often were able to purchase a complete item, such as a resuscitator, for the Rescue Squad and they would label the item with our chapter name,” Sowers said.
