Christiansburg native to coach at Bluefield
Drew Bailey is Bluefield College’s newly named head softball coach. He takes the position after serving this past season as head baseball coach at Averett University.
He was named Averett’s baseball coach in June 2017 following three seasons as an assistant baseball coach at Bluefield.
A native of Christiansburg, Bailey played collegiately at NCAA Division II Concord University, where he was a two-time all-conference relief pitcher. During his time there, he set the school record for saves and pitching appearances, and was a member of the 2008 Concord team that broke the program’s wins record.
Following his junior season in 2010, Bailey was selected in the 35th round of the Major League Baseball draft by the Oakland Athletics. He had his best pro season in 2011, when he went 5-0 with a 2.34 earned run average with the Single-A Vermont Lake Monsters.

SW Virginia 5k/8-mile Run
The Fourth Annual SWVA 811 Run will be held Saturday, August 11 and helps to raise awareness of the risk you take every time you dig without calling 811 first. All events start and end at Christiansburg Recreation Center with proceeds being donated to the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department.
The top male and female in each age group will receive medals. The price for the 5K is $25 before 8/10 and $30 the day of the race. Registration for the 8-mile event is $30 before 8/10 and $35 the day of the event.

RHS Boosters golf tournament
The Radford High School athletic booster club is holding its 11th annual captain’s choice golf tournament on Wednesday, August 1. The event will be held at the Pete Dye Course of Virginia Tech with a 13:30 p.m. shotgun start.

Tolbert sets eyes on nationals
Rising Virginia Tech senior Jaila Tolbert is ready to go to work in Detroit.
The right-side hitter left on Friday for the trip of a lifetime as she is set to compete on the U.S. Collegiate National Team, following her successful tryout in March in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Tolbert is one of 24 student-athletes who made the prestigious team and will represent the red, white and blue.
The CNT-Detroit squad, which is part of USA Volleyball’s High Performance pipeline and is considered a second tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Team, will train from June 22-26 at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.
Afterward, the athletes will be assigned to one of two 12-member teams that will play three exhibition matches against each other at the Cobo Center from June 27-28 and June 30. The matches are being held in conjunction with the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships under the same roof.
Hokies named to all-ACC academic team
Virginia Tech women’s golfers Amanda Hollandsworth and Elizabeth Bose have been named to the 2018 All-ACC Academic Women’s Golf Team, as announced by the conference on Thursday. This is Hollandsworth’s first year on the team, while Bose makes her second consecutive appearance on the team. This marks the first time in that Virginia Tech has placed two student-athletes on the team.
Bose, a rising senior from Norfolk. Virginia, was recently named to the 2018 Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District 3 Women’s At-Large team. A clinical neuroscience and biochemistry double major at Virginia Tech, Bose was awarded the 2017 Skelton Award for Academic Excellence in Athletics, the top academic honor awarded by the Virginia Tech athletics department.
Hollandsworth, a Floyd native who graduated in May with a degree in Bio Science, will return next season for her final year of eligibility. She was second on the team in scoring average (74.21) and final round scoring average (74.82). She had a third place finish at the Augusta 3M Invitational and an eighth place finish at the Moon Golf Invitational, to go along with two additional to 20 individual finishes this season.
