SALEM – The Virginia Department of Transportation’s Salem District has worked overnight to plow and treat roads. This morning, drivers should use caution and check road conditions in their area. Roads that appear wet may actually be icy and slippery. Drivers should pay particular attention to ramps, bridges, overpasses and other cooler areas where slick spots may form.

As of 4:30 a.m., motorists can expect the following road conditions for the 12-county Salem District:

I-81 in the Roanoke area and New River Valley is in minor condition which means it is mostly clear with isolated slick spots. I-77 in Carroll County and I-581 in Roanoke are in minor condition.
Primary routes (those numbered 1-599) in counties throughout the area are in minor condition. All secondary routes (those numbered 600 and above) are in moderate condition with the exceptions of Henry and Patrick counties which are in minor condition.
The Salem District includes the counties of Bedford, Botetourt, Carroll, Craig, Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Henry, Montgomery, Patrick, Pulaski and Roanoke.
Motorists can find the latest road conditions before travelling on 511 Virginia at www.511Virginia.org.
Road condition definitions:
Severe – Significant accumulations of snow; partially blocking the road; conditions are hazardous
Moderate – snow or ice on major portions of the roadway.
Minor – wet pavement except for isolated spots of snow, ice or slush.
