Montgomery County Public Schools’ Seniors of the Month

A senior from each Montgomery County High School was recognized as the senior of the month at the March 7 school board meeting.


Shannon Catherine Downs is the Auburn High School senior of the month. She is the Senior Class and BETA Club Secretary, a Virginia Girls State representative and member of Virginia Tech’s Honor Band and All-County Band. She plans to attend Wytheville Community College and earn an Associate’s Degree in dental hygiene.
Monica Sandu is the Blacksburg High School senior of the month. She is the French National Honor Society President, a Scholastic Arts and Writing Gold Key recipient and a Virginia Girls State representative. She plans to one day make a major contribution to humanity.
Tyler Kern Kuchan is the Christiansburg High School senior of the month. He is a varsity cross country and track and field athlete, a National Honors Society member and has twice been an All-State award recipient. He plans to attend the College of William & Mary and hopes to become a physical therapist.
Graciela Cruz is the Eastern Montgomery High School senior of the month. She is a BETA Club member, volunteers at the Meadowbrook Public Library and is on the President’s List for the New River Community College. She plans to study psychology at Radford University and hopes to become a family therapist.

Each student is chosen by the principal at their respective high school to be recognized at the first board meeting of the month.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Miear and School Board Chair Gunin Kiran (District A) present the students with a certificate of their achievement, followed by a photo with the student and their guest(s).
