The construction of the Fieldstone apartments, an affordable and senior housing property on Fieldstone Lane just off Givens Lane in Blacksburg has announced it is nearing completion.

The property owned by Park Properties Management Company based in Charlottesville caters to seniors and low-income families according to a press release. Applications for this new property will begin in December.

Sixty units are available to people 55 and older and 84 units for low-income families. The units for senior residents will be single-level one or two-bedroom quadruplexes and low-income family units are both two and three-bedroom apartments.

The Fieldstone development for low-income and senior residents had controversial beginnings. The owners of Blacksburg Estates, Frank Bruno and Don Carter, originally submitted a plan in 2013 to rezone the entire mobile home park to single-family and town homes, a proposal that met with considerable outcry from trailer park residents and neighbors.

Now, the Fieldstone development has received public support for keeping much of the mobile home park while increasing the overall availability of affordable housing.
