Thurman, Dixie Altizer

Dixie Altizer Thurman, 77, of Wilson, NC passed away Wednesday. Her funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m. today, Saturday, March 31, at First Presbyterian Church, 414 Sunset Road, Wilson, NC. The Rev. Dr. Tom Watkins will officiate.


The family will receive friends immediately following the service at First Presbyterian Church in the Dudley Room, and other times at the home.

Born on July 7, 1940, Dixie was a member of the Wilson Active Artists Association and a member of the North Carolina Watercolor Society, along with being a Master Gardner with the Wilson Botanical Gardens. She was a graduate of Radford University with a BS in Business Education and taught in Christiansburg and Richmond, Virginia, and Atlanta, Georgia. Dixie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a friend to all who knew her.

Dixie is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Roger Z. Thurman, Sr.; her daughter, Bianca Thurman of Elm City; her son, R. Zalon Thurman, Jr., and wife, Michelle of Cary; grandchildren, Maxwell Hobgood, Thurman Hobgood, Margaret Hampton Thurman, and R. Zalon “ Tack” Thurman, III; sister, Becky Whitlock of Christiansburg, Virginia; her brothers, Rodney Altizer and Carlos Altizer both of Christiansburg, Virginia, and her sister-in-law, Claire Thurman Booth and her family all of Christiansburg, Virginia.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials in Dixie’s memory to the Wilson Botanical Gardens, 1806 Goldsboro Street S, Wilson, North Carolina 27893.
