During the 2018 fiscal year, Blacksburg Transit hit a new record of four million riders in one year.

Blacksburg Transit busses sit on the Virginia Tech campus. Student’s make up a large portion of the service’s ridership.

Unprecedented growth and strong support for sustainable communities and transportation options in the Blacksburg area played a part in the increase in ridership according to the BT announcement.

To address this explosive growth, BT purchased larger buses, updated and added new routes and hired additional bus drivers.

“Reaching 4 million riders is a major accomplishment for a system of our size,” said Blacksburg Transit Director Tom Fox. “We strive to provide a high level of quality service and will continue to work to serve the public transportation needs of the community.”

The system started in 1983 with six buses, and has since expanded to 51 fixed-route buses and 18 body-on-chassis vehicles, for a total of 69.

BT serves Virginia Tech and the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg.
