An inmate at the Western Virginia Regional Jail has died after becoming ill at the facility and being transported to the hospital.

According to WVRJ, “on the morning of Sept. 13, 2023, inmate William Harbor, 48, became ill. WVRJ security and medical staff immediately addressed his illness and activated 911. Roanoke County Fire-EMS personnel responded to the jail and transported him to the hospital.”

“Harbor was seen at Roanoke Memorial Hospital where his condition worsened,” the announcement continued. “While being treated, Harbor experienced what is believed to have been a cardiac arrest. He was pronounced deceased at 12:52 p.m.”

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Roanoke will perform an autopsy.

“All information at this point indicates this death was due to natural causes,” according to WVRJ.

Harbor was committed to WVRJ on June 28, 2023 and was awaiting trial for larceny-auto theft.
