SHAWSVILLE – As the cost for food continues to affect communities across Virginia, Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library is proud to announce the launch of the Meadowbrook Free Fridge at the Meadowbrook Public Library in Shawsville.

This initiative aims to provide accessible and nutritious food to individuals and families in need within the local community.

The Free Fridge, situated conveniently inside the library’s entrance, is made possible with the generous partnership of Virginia Cooperative Extension, the Eastmont Community Foundation, Shawsville Ruritan Club, and Red Sun Farms. Stocked with a variety of fresh food, often locally-sourced, the fridge is open for individuals to take what they need, free of charge.

Cindy Minnick, the manager of Meadowbrook Public Library, expressed her enthusiasm for the program.

“People are welcome to come in and take what they need,” she said. “We’re proud to offer this service to our community.”

According to data from the state Department of Health and Feeding America, many rural communities in Virginia, particularly in southwestern regions, experience higher rates of food insecurity. Meadowbrook Public Library recognizes the importance of addressing this issue and strives to make a meaningful impact through innovative solutions like the Free Fridge program.

“While a library may not be the first place one thinks of for food assistance, in rural communities like eastern Montgomery County, it is often one of the most accessible and visible locations,” said Minnick.

The introduction of the Free Fridge program builds upon the success of similar initiatives in other libraries across the state, such as the Floyd Free Fridge, as well as similar programs in Pearisburg and Chesapeake. Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library is committed to fostering a healthier and more resilient community by providing essential resources and support to those in need.
