A man is being held without bond after an altercation that culminated with him firing his handgun into the air and fleeing the scene.

According to the Radford City Police Department, officers responded to a report of shots fired in the 500 block of Fairfax Street on Thursday, May 29, 2025 at approximately 5:01 p.m.

“Upon arrival, officers determined that an altercation had taken place, during which a firearm was brandished and discharged in the air; no one was injured,” the department announced. “The suspect fled the scene in a vehicle prior to officers’ arrival. Witnesses at the scene were able to provide a description of both the suspect and the vehicle.”

“Responding units located the suspect vehicle and conducted a traffic stop in the 1800 block of East Main Street. The suspect, identified as Brent J. Thompson, was taken into custody without further incident.”

Thompson, 20, has been charged with brandishing of a firearm, reckless handling of a firearm, driving under the influence, assault and battery and willful discharge of a firearm. He is being held without bond at New River Valley Regional Jail.
