William “Bill” Lacy Linkous walked through Heaven’s gates on July 7, 2026, after a short but fierce battle with cancer. He is preceded in death by his wife, Debra; father, Lawrence Linkous; mother and stepfather, Thelma and Ervin Phillips; and brothers, Wayne and Larry Linkous.
Born Sept. 23, 1952, he spent his life serving others in his community. In March 1981, he joined the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, where he served for 45 faithful years. During this time, he became an honorary member of the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, and he was also a member of the Virginia Defense Force for a number of years. He served as a deputy for the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office for 21 years before retiring to spend more time with his family in the house he built with Brothers Three Log Homes Construction, where he was employed.
You could tell by just spending time with him how much he loved the fire department and his community. He found joy in his last job working with MCPS as a fire watcher with a fellow firefighter, the late Capt. Mike Dickerson. He enjoyed singing and attended Harbor of Hope Church, where he sang bass with the choir. He enjoyed car shows, vacationing at the Smokey Mountains, anything fire-related, taking pictures, his dogs, Temu, and a good bargain! But he loved his family more than anything.
Bill and his late wife, Debra, had 43 wonderful years of marriage together. Bill is survived by his sons, Billy Linkous (Christie) and John Linkous (Kelly); grandchildren, Maria, Brunner, Dexton and Stella; his sister, Wanda McCraw; his half-brothers, Mike Linkous, Tim Linkous, and John Linkous; and many other loved ones.
Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, July 18, 2026, at 3 p.m., in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Neal Turner officiating. The family will receive visitors on Saturday, July 18, 2 – 3 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home in Blacksburg. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that you donate to the Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department.
