Troy David Simpkins, a lifelong resident of Radford and a proud Bobcat, passed away May 15, 2025. He was 70 years old.
In his career as a graphic artist, David worked at The Blacksburg Sun and the Radford News Journal, and then spent more than 30 years in the College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. He retired in 2017.
David was an athlete, an artist, and a writer of fiction and of songs. His passion in life – and his refuge – was music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Troy Rudolph Simpkins and Margie Marie Simpkins. He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Kathy Acosta, and by his sister, Lisa Simpkins of Hendersonville, N.C.
No funeral is planned, but a celebration of David’s life will be held in September or October of 2025.
If you would like to honor David, consider making a donation to his favorite charity, the Little Red Barn Animal Rescue in Wisconsin, or to any animal rescue organization. The Simpkins family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia.
